Frequently Asked Questions
Let us help!General Information about HART
HART, or Haywood Arts Regional Theatre, is nestled in the shadow of Cold Mountain right off of the Main Street in historic downtown Waynesville. HART has been serving its community for over 35 years as the premium theatre of Waynesville, NC. With 3 performance spaces and a recent addition of an outdoor stage, HART is able to offer year-round quality theatre to patrons and artists alike. Our Main stage offers the traditional proscenium seating with a handcrafted barn style auditorium of 255 seats. Our Fangmeyer theatre offers audiences and artists unique opportunities with an open seating plan allowing for seating in the round, thrust, alleyway, and everything in between! Our Feichter Studio offers a small black box experience with the ability to seat approximately 70 and is occasionally used for our studio season. HART has also begun to explore outdoor theatre and hopes to offer more outdoor performance opportunities in the HART amphitheater located in between our two buildings.
In addition to our main season and studio season, HART also offers incredible opportunities for education through our Kids at HART program. With a full line up of classes, 2 shows every spring and fall semester, and summer theatre camps offered every summer, Kids at HART is leading the way in Waynesville for Theatre education.
Parking
HART has a parking lot with 100 spaces and a driveway for drop offs.
Studio Season
From January through April, HART presents a more daring, edgy, and intimate season with our annual Studio Season. Five to Six shows are selected through artist proposals and reflect the stories our community wants to explore.
The studio season is also a great way for new directors to become involved at HART. All directors must present a studio show or assistant direct a main stage show before applying to direct in our main season. Applications for the next season’s studio shows will be available at the end of summer.
Theatre Education, Classes, and Camps
The Academy at HART, our theatre education program, was founded by Shelia Sumpter, who brings a lifetime of experience and knowledge to the young theatre enthusiasts of Waynesville. The Academy at HART never charges for children to be in shows, auditions and performances are a free and incredible opportunity for kids to learn more about theatre with hands on experience. The Academy at HART offers a musical and play in both the spring and fall.
The Academy at HART also offers an array of educational opportunities with full spring and fall semesters. These classes run for 8-12 weeks and offer an in depth look at topics such as acting, dance, directing, choreography, and stage craft. We stay busy in the summer as well with two to four summer theatre camps! These week-long day camps are great for all ages and experience levels. You can learn more by visiting the Academy at HART page on our website or by following Kids at HART on Instagram and Facebook
Auditions
You can visit harttheatre.org/auditions for up to date information about auditions at HART. We hold season auditions in February each year. This gives actors a chance to audition for all of the HART season shows. To be considered for a small actors stipend, actors must bring a headshot and resume and prepare a short monologue and/or a 16-32 bar cut of a musical theatre song. HART often has additional auditions throughout the year as directors finish casting for each of their shows.
The Academy at HART productions audition on a show by show basis. Audition information can be found on the Academy at HART page and on our auditions page. The Academy at HART production auditions are held separately from HART season auditions.
